A Stolen Carriage (cw: threatened violence towards children)

Romeo emerged from a cave, a white weasel on his shoulder. He looked around as he hears the sound of a horse getting closer and his eyes widened as he saw the horse and cart hurtling towards him, the man driving it was hitting the house with a whip. Piccolo jumped off his shoulder and scurried away.

They pulled to a halt. The man, a fierce looking man with a scar on his face, glared down on him.

"Where's the other one?" The man glared down at Romeo.

"I don't know sir."

The man just stared at him, "Get on?" Romeo made a noise of confusion, "We're getting out of this town."

"Where did you get this carriage?" Romeo asked, looking worried. The man with the scar just hit the horse once more to make it circle around, facing back the way it came. When it stopped Romeo moved closer. "Did you steal it?"

The man with the scar had stood up but he did not look at Romeo. "Quit blubbering, get on."

Romeo shook his head and took a deep breath before speaking clearly. "No!"

Now the man turned to look at him, his voice low and dangerous. "What?"

Romeo drew himself up. "I'm not getting onto no stolen carriage."

For a moment the two just stared at each other, the man with the scar's anger facing Romeo's determination. The the man jumped down from the carriage and stalked towards Romeo, Romeo backed away but not far enough or fast enough. The man shoved him, sending him sprawling to the ground. Romeo sat up, looking scared and looked up at the man, just in time to see him angrily lift the whip. His face was thunderous as he drew his arm back ready to strike. Romeo flung an arm over his face to protect himself.

However no blow came. The man just stood there angry and glaring, whip raised and after a moment Romeo lowered his arm slightly and opened his eyes. He looked more confused than frightened now as he watched the man, puzzled. The man with the scar seemed to snap out of it and raised the whip a bit higher, with more determination. Romeo flinched.

"Romeo!" There was a clatter from behind as firewood hit the ground and a moment later a blonde haired boy, a little older and taller than Romeo ran towards them. He ran to his side, putting a hand on his shoulder.

"Romeo! Are you okay?" Romeo nodded but his eyes quickly returned to the man with the whip. The other boy glared at the man.

"We could have escaped easily!" His voice was angry. "But we didn't. And now! Treating Romeo this way!" He helped Romeo to his feet, arm still around him protectively. "I'll never forgive you!"

He looked down at Romeo and Romeo met his gaze. "Romeo, let's go?" Romeo looked confused and the other boy smiled gently at him. "Let's go to Milano, the both of us. Let's go!"

Romeo smiled and nodded, understanding now. They both looked back at the man with the scar but it was the older boy who spoke again. "We'll go to Milano. Count on it. And we'll keep the contract."

Both boys walked back towards the cave, the man watched them silently. Inside the cave both boys had a bag and they picked them up, Piccolo scampering up Romeo to squeeze into one of the pockets.

"Things will work out alright, somehow." The blonde boy told Romeo with another gentle smile.

"If we work together." Romeo agreed. "Right! Let's go!" The two boys exited the cave where the man was still waiting. Heads up they walked past him, not even glancing at him. They hadn't gotten very far when another man came barrelling past them.

"Hey stop!" The man stopped by the carriage. "So you're the one who stole my..." He trailed off as he realised the man with the scar was not even looking at him, instead staring after the boys, a thoughtful look on his face. "Say, what is it? Is something wrong?" The man with the scar just pushed past him. "Oi! Hey..." A bag of money flew through the air and the man catches it as the slaver climbed onto the carriage.

"Buy yourself a new carriage." He muttered as he took hold of the reigns.

The boys had stopped, watching this exchange with shock on their faces and the man with the scar drove up to them. "Get on."

The boys were silent and then the blonde boy stepped forward. "I want you to promise you won't hit us."

The man said nothing, just looked away and there was silence. Romeo and the other boy looked at each other and then back at the carriage. Romeo was confused at why the god of death would act this way. But he felt that there was something deep inside the god of deaths heart that had come to life. He gave a tiny smile

They got on the carriage.
