World Information: Wiki. It is pretty terrible though.
Basically Romeo comes from a small village called Sonogno in the alps in Tessiner/Ticino, an Italian canoton of Switzerland. The year is 1838. Sonogno is a small village and Romeo's family were farmers. The summer of 1838 brought a drought and his family fell into poverty. Part of the story also takes part in Milan. He then goes to heaven as a shinki. The Far Shore was a land of temples and occupied by gods and the shinki that served them. They could teleport down to the Near Shore which was a modern day earth, primarily Japan (though a very anime-esque Japan). He has been to a few other countries as well but not ever for very long.
Personal History:
Here is his history. His canon point is just before he breaks his leg. In this crau version he then dies (by falling down a chimney) and ends up in heaven. He was there for seven months- he arrived in heaven with no memories apart from his name. Eventually he found his god, a young girl called Elfnein and she gave him a shinki name which allowed her to call him into a vessel form, in order to fight ayakashi (monsters that feed on despair). He lived with her in her library temple and they worked together to help her followers. Heavens were infiltrated and sometimes attacked by a cult that was raising new gods not loyal to heaven. During Romeo's time there there was a volcano in the Far Shore and he took part in raiding a cultist compound as well as fighting blight circles and gathering intel. He took part in prayers helping Elfnein to help her followers, often these included fighting ayakashi, something that can only be done with a god and shinki together. During this time he made a lot of friends and learned a whole lot of things!
Personality:
"A truly strong person will neither strike nor begrudge another. A truly strong person is someone who always has the strength to be kind to others." These are the words of Romeo’s father and it is a ideology that Romeo believes in and sums up the heart of Romeo's character: Romeo always does the right thing, even when it would make his life easier to do the wrong thing or to simply do nothing at all.
This is an eleven year old boy who sold himself into slavery to save his sick father, who almost drowned saving a slaver, who ran into a building that he knew was about to explode to warn the police men and his master, a man who had let him be starved, hurt, locked in a cage and arrested for a crime he knows he did not commit.
Romeo always tries to protect his friends; he is prepared to give his life to any of them and most of all to Alfredo. When his friends are in danger then that is the most important thing, he does not care if he is hurt in helping them. This leads to him doing reckless things in order to help his friends, jumping from heights, in front of bullets, into rivers. He is prepared to die to prove that Angeletta is a pure hearted person. Most of the time he doesn't even realise that what he does is reckless and stupid. Indeed when asked about it he is confused, as if he cannot even think of putting his life before others.
This desire to always protect his friend is amplified once he becomes the leader of the Black Brothers. Since then he is used to others looking to him for help and advice and when put with a group of others of his age he would come out as a natural leader. He tries to lead like Alfredo did, by being a person who helps others be strong and helps them find the courage within themselves.
He can be very dramatic, the Black Brothers is a secret society of children with passwords, flames of courage and vows. Vows are incredibly important to Romeo, he vows eternal friendship with Alfredo, later vows to help fulfil their dreams together, vows with the black brothers. A vow of friendship with Romeo is important, sacred. If he promises to look after you or protect you he will happily die for you.
Romeo is not physically strong, he gets stronger in his time as a chimney sweep, and becomes good a climbing. However his method of protection is to stand between his friends and those that try to hurt them and hope his friends manage to escape before the threat is finished beating Romeo to the ground. He even fights those who are much bigger and stronger than him, but that said he is not a violent person. He will fight to protect his friends, and he will fight to teach bullies a lesson but believes that peace is always better and he finally manages to secure a everlasting peace pact between the Wolf Pack and the Black Brothers.
Romeo is a farmers child, he knows animals, planting and how to fish. He is used to hard work even before he goes to work in Milano, where the work is even harder. He is respectful around adults, wary if he doesn't know them or if they have proven themselves likely to hurt him or his friends. He works hard and with good spirits, he dislikes being thought of as lazy or inept and will work ten times as hard to prove anyone who thinks of him as such wrong.
During his early life Romeo was not educated. He could not read before he arrived in Milano. He was taught to read by Angeletta and his friendly rivalry with Alfredo- wanting to be as clever and educated as his best friend, spurred him to further his education as best he could. He still doesn't know much about the world but he loves learning.
Romeo's dreams are very important to him because they are also Alfredo’s dreams, which were passed onto him when Alfredo died. His biggest dream is to help create a world where all children run free under the Blue Skies.
Romeo is full of enthusiasm for life. He continues smiling through anything and indeed when he stops smiling; after Alfredo dies, people are shocked. They can't believe that even something so awful would effect him like this. But things do affect Romeo. He gets scared and sad, he has moments of complete despair when the whole world is against him. Yet he never dwells on it, he pushes it aside and keeps his spirits up. This is done through punching the air and keeping going.
He believes others around him should keep their spirits up also. He tries to make sure they are happy and though he does try and help solve their problems his solutions are limited to the practical. He is not one to sit and talk about how he feels, he would rather try and fix things and move on. Even after Alfredo dies he never really talks about his grief, his coming to terms with what happened is all done through his friends punching him, him standing up again and taking on the responsibilities Alfredo gave him.
Whatever he does and wherever he is he knows that Alfredo is always with him and that gives him the strength to carry on, “You are hope itself to me,” he announces to Alfredo’s grave.
Romeo's maturity seems to fluctuate. At times he seems so much older than his eleven years, with all he sacrifices he is able to put others first in ways that most people years older cannot manage. At other times he seems very young. After Alfredo dies for example his grief makes him act the way we would expect a child his age to act. He even refuses, at first, to organise the funeral because "If we bury him he can't come back." For the most part Romeo is a young child thrown into a world where he has to act much older than he is.
It is a traditional coming of age tale, with him growing from a child reliant on his family (his father at one point calls him a selfish baby) to an adult (if a very small one) protecting others and standing up for what is right. He stands up for the truth and hates to be accused of things he did not do. He often has trouble understanding why others are hateful or want to hurt others even while being hurt himself.
For the most part Romeo’s worldview is very clear-cut. Good people are kind and help those around them; bad people hurt and are nasty to others. People who are outside of this binary of good and bad, or who are mixtures of both confuse him, as it is not something he has come across before. He tends to believe people are on the good side of his good/bad split until they prove themselves otherwise.
CRAU developments:
Romeo arrived in heaven with no memories. His essential personality stayed the same and he retained his skills and knowledge but he had no context for any of it. Mostly his personality did not shift too much. He is less wary of adults, as all the adults he came across were kind and respectful to him. He met many different people and got a much wider world view than he had before, he learned to understand different viewpoints and even though he never did quite understand the likes of Chikusa, who believed most people were bad and would harm them. However he does understand Joss, a young boy who it turned out was actually an ancient vampire. Romeo knows in his heart that Joss is a good person and so far Joss has proven it despite the mistakes he has made.
He has learned a lot in his time in the heavens and so is a lot more educated than a canon-Romeo. His education didn't take a clear path and he had a lot of teachers but suffice to say shinki Romeo is a lot more educated than he once was. He also has more interests than before. He learned to cook and really enjoys it even if he still sometimes struggles with recipes. He can make coffee in many different ways. He loves dancing, making things, art (he's terrible) and singing.
Being a shinki has become part of his personality. It is his job to help Elfnein and it is one he takes very seriously. There are many things that are problematic about the god/shinki bond but for Romeo it is simple. He and Elfnein are a team. Elfnein is the boss but she's a good leader and so Romeo feels comfortable giving his opinion but at the end of the day if she says no he will obey, much like he did when she disagreed with kite fighting. He cares for Elfnein a lot and would do anything for her, in many ways she takes the part that Alfredo did in his life before. He would die for her without a doubt.
In some ways Romeo seems younger than he was when he was in Milan. Being in a place with kind and considerate adults who watched out for him and no memory of anything before allowed him to be a child again. But in other ways he is a lot more mature. He lived with just Elfnein which meant the day to day running of a temple fell to him. He came across some Big Questions during his time in the heavens- he met a child god who told him the heavens were bad and he struggled with the concept of doing bad things for good reasons.
During his time in the heavens he remembered three moments from his life. The first two were snapshots from his journey to Milan, the second one was the moment when Alfredo taught him how to keep his spirits up. The third one was being sold in Milan and his vow of eternal friendship with Alfredo. This led to another round of big questions and a vow that he would do his best to help everybody and not let such bad things happen in this new world he had found himself in.
All in all Romeo is still Romeo. His heart is as big as ever, his self sacrificing tendencies are still in full force "What's self preservation, miss Hibiki?" Was one of his defining questions of his time in the heavens. He will do anything for his friends, being dead didn't stop him, I doubt anything will.
Key themes:
Self sacrifice- Doing anything and everything to help others. Especially your friends but also everyone else. A strong person always has the strength to be kind to others.
Hope- As long as you have hope things will be alright. Keep hope, keep a smile on your face. "There's only one day like today in your entire life. When all else fails, keep living."
Friendship- Your friends are your strength. He learned that in Milan and he learned it again in the far Shore.
Main Motivation:
To protect Elfnein with everything he has. To be the best shinki he can be and to help all his friends forever.
Skills:
Shinki: Being a shinki means Romeo is able to jump higher and fall lighter than normal humans. He is easily forgettable and he will not age or grow. He is never full, always being slightly hungry even after a huge meal. He will try not to eat all the food on the train!
He has a shinki name (a kanji on his chest). If his god is present she can call this name and turn him into his vessel form (a weasel), whilst in this form he has an aura of hope, allowing those within five feet of him to feel hope and shake off energy draining or despair effects.
He can cast borderlines (a shield of energy or thrown as a slashing attack).
He also knows two spells 'bind' (holds a target still) and 'umbra' (turns Romeo invisible) For bind he needs to know the targets name, umbra uses his shinki name. If they work or not depends on a bunch of factors (confidence, superiority and strength). If I ever use them I will discuss it with the other player first.
Outside of that he's a normal human.
He is a good climber and a very strong swimmer. He knows how to cook and bake. The far Shore imported Japanese into their heads (rather than using a translator) so he speaks Japanese as well as Italian.

A bookmark Elfnein made for him. It has lots of glitter on it.
